Exercise After Tummy Tuck Surgery
Before anything else, it is very important to rest completely during the first two weeks following a tummy tuck, as this procedure usually involves muscle tightening. Engaging in strenuous exercises can negatively affect your tummy tuck results.
In my practice, I advise patients to avoid strenuous exercise for 6 weeks to allow the tissues to heal properly. Apart from this, you can generally begin light exercises — such as walking and gentle upper-body movements — about 3 weeks after surgery.
How Long Does Swelling Last After a Tummy Tuck?
Depending on the extent of the tummy tuck and the amount of liposuction performed at the same time, swelling is very common after the procedure. Most patients experience noticeable swelling during the first two weeks, but the majority of it resolves by 6 weeks.
However, the final 10% of swelling may take around 6 months to disappear. Therefore, patients can expect to see approximate results about 6 weeks after surgery.
In short, you can expect swelling to last between 3 and 6 months.
Additionally, if liposuction was performed at the same time, the recovery process may take slightly longer.
Tummy Tuck Scars / Can I Wear a Bikini One Year After?
First of all, there will always be a visible scar after a tummy tuck. However, the visibility of the scar depends on factors such as skin tone, skin quality, genetics, and skin tension.
A tummy tuck typically involves two scars: one around the belly button and another horizontal scar that can be hidden under clothing.
These scars also vary depending on individual anatomy—such as abdominal circumference, trunk height, umbilical position, and the presence of stretch marks.
A detailed pre-operative consultation should be conducted with your surgeon before undergoing an abdominoplasty. In my practice, the pre-operative consultation is an essential part of the procedure. Thorough planning between the patient and the surgeon helps determine surgical maneuvers that lead to well-hidden tummy tuck scars.
Can You Have a Baby After a Tummy Tuck?
Yes, you can become pregnant after a tummy tuck. There is no medical contraindication to pregnancy following the procedure.
I advise my patients not to rush into pregnancy until they have completely healed. Waiting at least 4 to 6 months is usually sufficient.
Is a Tummy Tuck Safe? What Are the Risks and Side Effects?
As with all surgical procedures, it is important to acknowledge the inherent risks associated with a tummy tuck. However, a tummy tuck is generally a safe operation.
A tummy tuck is a common plastic surgery procedure performed to improve the appearance and contour of the abdomen and repair separated abdominal muscles. When performed correctly and on an appropriate candidate, it is a very safe procedure.
