How long does it take for scars to fully fade after breast augmentation surgery?
After breast augmentation, it may take 12 months or longer for a new scar to fade. However, this duration can vary depending on factors such as the patient’s age, skin type, post-operative scar care, and the proximity of the original incision line.
It is also important to keep scars away from sunlight until they no longer appear red.
At what age do breasts stop developing?
Breast development typically slows down or nears completion between the ages of 18 and 20. However, changes can continue throughout life due to weight gain/loss, genetics, pregnancy, and age. All of these factors can affect the breasts over a lifetime.
What causes loss of sensation after breast augmentation?
There are two types of sensation loss: around the nipple and in the décolleté area. Reduced sensation in these areas is very common but usually temporary.
Loss of sensation can occur after breast augmentation, but it is generally transient.
As the breasts swell and heal, some decrease in sensation may occur, which usually lasts for several months after surgery.
What are the signs of a hematoma after breast augmentation?
Identifying and promptly treating hematomas after breast augmentation is crucial to avoid secondary complications.
Symptoms of a hematoma include bruising on one side, widespread and increasing swelling, and sudden onset of severe pain on one side. Hematomas require revision surgery to control bleeding and drain the accumulated blood inside the implant pocket.
If you experience any of these symptoms, I strongly recommend contacting your surgeon immediately.
How long should I stop breastfeeding before breast augmentation surgery?
In general, the breast must be completely dry before surgery. The nipple and milk ducts can harbor bacteria, and any leakage during implant surgery may contaminate the implant.
When can I take a shower after breast augmentation surgery?
I usually recommend postponing showering for at least 48 to 72 hours after surgery. After this period, patients may shower comfortably, but they should avoid bathtubs and hot tubs for at least 2 weeks.
However, following your surgeon’s specific recommendations is always best, as each breast surgery may involve different conditions.
What are the effects of smoking on breast augmentation results?
As with any type of surgery, smoking should be avoided to ensure proper healing.
Smoking damages the airway and makes it difficult to clear secretions, increasing the risk of lung infections.
I advise my patients to avoid nicotine for at least 2 weeks because nicotine constricts blood vessels and may delay wound healing.
When can I swim after breast augmentation surgery?
You may go swimming once your incisions have completely healed, which generally takes about 3–4 weeks.
You should also avoid exposing the incisions to sunlight, as this can make the scars more noticeable.
However, as long as you avoid sun exposure on the incision areas, you may participate in activities such as scuba diving or spearfishing.
